Amine Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) Magnetic Resonance Imaging 

A major problem in surgery for glioblastoma is the inability to detect infiltrating tumor cells beyond the contrast-enhancing (CE) portion of tumor. We have applied a technique called amine chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST), which takes advantage of differences in pH of created by tumor metabolism, to visualize infiltrating glioblastoma cells. 

Single-cell sequencing of non-enhancing regions of glioblastoma

Glioblastoma cells outside the contrast-enhancing (CE) region are not often addressed with surgery. In a tumor characterized by marked intra-tumoral heterogeneity, understanding differences between the CE and the infiltrative non-enhancing (NE), tumor is paramount to identifying adjuvant therapy. We carried out single cell sequencing of these regions and compared the tumor and non-tumor microenviornment to identify unique areas of tumor. 

Identification of cerebrospinal fluid production mechanisms in human choroid plexus

Production of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the choroid plexus has been studied heavily in animals. However, the difficulty in obtaining non-pathologic human choroid plexus tissue has made it difficult to translate these studies into human cells. We have accessed human choroid plexus tissues during choroid plexus cauterization surgeries for hydrocephalus to ​identify receptors and mechanisms of CSF production in human tissue. Designing inhibitors for these receptors may be a tool to treat diseases like hydrocephalus. 

Opioid free management of pain after craniotomy

The opioid crisis is a major issue for all healthcare providers. One contributor to opioid use and dependency is prescription of opioids after surgical procedures. In order to limit the amount of opioids given to the patient after surgery, we have studied various techniques for decreasing post-operative pain without the use of opioid medication. These include: scalp blocks, neuropathic medications, muscle relaxants, and anti-inflammatory medications. With these techniques, we hope to eliminate the need for opioids after craniotomy type surgeries. 

Investigation of differences in  in neuro-oncologic care by race and gender

It has been documented using large database studies that there may be differences in access to care, treatment decisions, and outcomes in patients with brain tumors when stratified by race or gender. We seek to delve into this data by taking a detailed look at these variables in our diverse health system within the greater Los Angeles area.
